About this site

Explore births by country, 0–2100. Historical estimates through 2023; UN medium-scenario projections for 2024–2100.

What this is

Babies on Map shows estimated annual births for 236 countries and areas, for every year from 0 CE to 2100. Births are estimated as population × crude birth rate ÷ 1,000; where those two inputs come from changes by era, and every value is labelled with the era it came from. The methodology sets out the whole chain, including a measurement of what the pre-1800 model gets wrong.

It is an independent project, not affiliated with the United Nations, HYDE, Gapminder or Our World in Data, although it rests on their published work. It has no login, collects no personal data, and is free to use.

Using the data

The processed datasets are served directly as meta.json, world.json and /data/series.bin, and may be reused. Please cite the original sources listed on the sources page rather than this site: where our estimates differ from theirs, theirs are the ones with the evidence behind them.

Languages

The site is published in English, German, French and Spanish. The figures are identical in every language; only the words around them change.
